LGBT Community Visibility and Social Media

Because of social media, outlets such as Facebook, YouTube, blogs, twitter and tumblr have all contributed to making the LGBT community more visible. What I find very amazing is the fact that a lot of LGBT people in these outlets are part of the younger generation.

Seeing this trend gives me hope about the LGBT community and its future. Looking back in history, it was always the use the Brokedown barriers. Homophobia and the LGBT community is no exception.

Within the last few years, one of the saddest news that the world learned about is the number of LGBT youth that commit suicide because of who they are. This is attributed to the society and environment that they lived in that made them believe that they were good for nothing, and death was the only answer.

We need more out LGBT individuals out there to raise awareness that we are here, we are here to say, we are getting stronger, and we will do what it takes to make sure that every LGBT person knows that they’re loved for who they are and that they are accepted for who they are. We will make sure to let them know that they are not good for nothing, and that they deserve to live a happy life just like everyone else.

For all LGBT individuals out there who are using social media to make the community more visible, thank you for what you doing keep it up.

Thoughts of A Queer is a site that started back in 2009 as an outlet for me to write about my Coming Out story and my journey as a queer Asian woman. When not writing, I work in the healthcare field, tend to my dogs and cat, and live happily with my wife in our beautiful home.
