Congratulations New York!

Today is a historical day for the LGBT community. New York approved a bill regarding same-sex marriage, and it has now been signed into law. So for all you gay couples out there who wish to marry, feel free to add the state of New York to one of the possible states where you can exchange your matrimonial vows with your beloved one.

One down, many more states to go. We will definitely receive a lot more heat form many organizations, especially many Fundamentalist Christian organizations who strongly believe that being gay is a “disease, a defect, and something that can be easily changed”. This is a good slap in the face for them LGBT community haters. Take that!

I am going to New York on July 8 to see a friend, and knowing that someone like me is welcome to this state makes me feel happy that there are places in this world where I can be accepted for who I am, like a “come as you are” type of thing.

Congratulations to New York for this amazing accomplishment, and hopefully more states follow the Big Apple’s footsteps in promoting equality among all.

For another day of life! Cheers!

Happy Valentine’s Day and Thoughts about Marriage

Hello everyone!

Happy Valentine’s Day to you all! I am here in Massachussetts, USA where gay marriage is legal. Unfortunately in the United States, only a few number of states allow gay marriage. I do not recall on top of my head right now how many states are there, but I am sure that there are less than 10 states out of 50 who do allow marriage or some type of civil union.

Today, although I wish to be at this protest with my activist friends back home in Florida regarding LGBT marriage rights, I am not able to come because I am in another state. In a sense, I am still amazed that I am in a state where if I choose to, I can get married to my special someone (but do not have one currently).

Marriage is a sacred ceremony in so many ways and not just for religious reasons. It is a sacred commitment that you personally take with your beloved one. Marriage is a legal binding contract that makes two people one in the eyes of many institutions, such as government and religious institutions. However sacred people feel about this tradition, marriage has been around for so many years and many cultural traditions have shaped this into what we think marriage is today. However, there are many reasons why people get married aside from love. Some marry for immigration purposes, some marry because it was arranged a long time ago, and whatever else have you reasons people get married.
Being a witness to my cousin’s marriage that happened two days ago from this post, it brings hope to me that there are people out there who are living out their “happily ever after” moments, and they’re much better than what media portrays. So marriage today is pretty much different in so many ways compared to years ago. But no matter what it is that takes place to change marriage, there will still always be that reason that will stay, and that is to settle down, grow old, and start a family with your beloved partner, gay or straight.

NOM strikes again! This time in the city where the Magic lives.

There would probably be more NOM supporters if the materials available at the rally included FREE FOOD. Who doesn’t show up for free food?

National Organization for Marriage strikes again, this time at the land where the Magic lives in Orlando, Florida at First Christian Church in Winter Park (Orlando), Florida. Based on reports that I have read about this event, 34 NOM supporters showed up for the event, and 134 same-sex marriage supporters showed up for the event. August 8, 2010 is a Sunday. It seems as if members of the First Christian Church congregation had better things to do aside from participating in the NOM anti-gay marriage protest.

What was NOM doing in Orlando in the first place? Why Orlando?

Originally, the event was supposed to be held in Tampa, but was changed last minute. NOM Tour Trackers were not allowed in the event, although local news reporters were allowed in. According to Brian Brown, president of NOM, Same-sex marriage is a threat to humanity.

So wait, Mr. Brian Brown is saying that same-sex marriage is more of a threat than world hunger, poverty, genocides, illnesses and diseases, persecution, sanitation in third world countries, human trafficking just to name a few? They would rather proclaim a false lie than actually help with the world’s global issues that affect everyday life? If you think same-sex marriage is a threat to marriage, then what about divorce?

Here’s my proposal: “If you want to save marriage, BAN DIVORCE!” It’s plain simple. What dissolves marriages? What ends marriages? Answer: Divorce.

Ellen Johnson, a NOM spokesperson, stated on an article from Sunshinestatenews.comBelieve me, these people aren’t all sweetness and light. They can be very intimidating to the families on our bus. I wish they had stayed far away from us.”

The LGBT community members present at the NOM protest include same-sex families with their children, Sisters of Perpertual Indulgence, angels from Stand Up Florida, and various other LGBT organizations and supporters from all walks of life.

Who are they?

Taken from the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence home page:

“The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence® is a leading-edge Order of queer nuns. Since our first appearance in San Francisco on Easter Sunday, 1979, the Sisters have devoted ourselves to community service, ministry and outreach to those on the edges, and to promoting human rights, respect for diversity and spiritual enlightenment. We believe all people have a right to express their unique joy and beauty and we use humor and irreverent wit to expose the forces of bigotry, complacency and guilt that chain the human spirit.”

From Stand Up Florida’s website:

“It is the mission of Stand Up Florida to promote equality and secure equal rights for GLBTA persons throughout the State of Florida and beyond. We will work to achieve this goal through community organizing, local businesses, and government agencies. ”

So, this Ellen Johnson fears organizations who fight for equality? Sounds suspicious…

Another great protest by the LGBT community has been successful, and August 10 at North Carolina is NOM’s next stop. I heard there was an even greater turnout of LGBT community members who protested NOM’s Raleigh, NC rally. To see that the LGBT community is united in fighting against NOM, an anti-gay organization, brings joy to me because that say that the LGBT community is uniting in order to fight inequality, homophobia, and bigotry. Long live the LGBT community! Let there be equality among all!
